How Deep and How Far a Long Arm Excavator Reaches
If the bottom of your excavation is within 12 metres of where the machine can safely stand, this reaches it. No benching down, no temporary ramp, no machine in the hole.

Hire a long arm when the job looks like this

Can It Reach the Bottom of Your Excavation?

What You Give Up for the Reach
Reach is not free. Any supplier who tells you a long arm does everything a standard machine does has not run one. Three trade-offs you should price in before you book it:
Smaller bucket: 0.45 m³
A standard 20-tonne front carries roughly 0.5–1.3 m³. The long arm runs a narrower, lighter bucket because the load sits much further from the machine. Fewer cubic metres per pass.
Lifting capacity drops at full reach
The further out the arm goes, the less the machine can safely lift or tear. At 15 metres out it is a trimming and cleaning machine, not a bulk-cut machine.
Not for hard rock or breaking
A long reach front is not the carrier for a rock breaker. Hard material at depth is a different conversation, usually a standard machine working from a benched level.
