Plant hire gets compared on rate and spec. Neither one tells you what you will actually experience, which is how many of the days you paid for turned out to be productive days. A machine on a competitive rate that loses two days in a month is more expensive than a dearer one that loses none, and it is not a close contest. Most of that gap is decided in the ten minutes before the shift starts.
What a pre-start check actually covers
The walk-around is the same on every machine and takes a few minutes when it is a habit. Tracks or tyres for tension, damage and debris. Hydraulic hoses and rams for weeping, chafing and loose fittings. Pins, bushes and the bucket linkage for movement that was not there yesterday. Fluid levels, engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and fuel. Lights, beacon, horn and reverse alarm. Cab glass, mirrors and camera. Fire extinguisher and its inspection date. Then a short function test, boom, arm, bucket and slew, with the machine standing still.

Why it saves whole days, not minutes
Very few machine failures arrive without warning. A hose that bursts at eleven o clock was usually weeping at seven. A pin that fails was usually already moving. The difference between catching it on the walk-around and catching it mid-shift is not the repair cost, which is often the same. It is everything waiting behind the machine: the tipper at the loading point, the crew that cannot start the next activity, and the follow-on trade that loses its slot.
The second reason: the record
Controlled sites expect a pre-start record for plant working on them, and data centre projects in Johor tend to be among the stricter ones. When a site safety officer asks, the difference between having the record and not having it is a five-minute conversation versus a machine standing idle while paperwork is sorted out. That is the same lost day arriving by a different route.
Who should be doing it
If you hire a machine with an operator, the inspection belongs to the supplier, and it should happen whether or not anyone from your side is watching. If you hire a machine without an operator, it belongs to you, and it is worth agreeing in writing who is responsible for what before the machine arrives, particularly for anything that turns up damaged.
Three questions worth asking a plant supplier
Does your operator run a documented pre-start check every morning, and can we see the format? What happens if a defect is found at 7am, do we get a replacement machine the same day or do we lose the shift? Who is on the other end of the phone when a machine stops at eleven o clock, the operator, a supervisor, or a call centre?
The answers say more about how a month of hire will go than the rate does.
What we do
Our operators run the check every morning on every machine before the shift starts. Because the machines and the operators are both ours, a defect found at 7am is our problem to solve rather than a conversation between three companies, and we have our own low loader for the machine swap if it comes to that. The same routine runs across every machine type we send out.
If your project runs to a specific site safety requirement, tell us what it asks for before the machine is booked. It is a much easier conversation then than at your gate on the morning of delivery. Contact us at +6011-105 95686.
