What Actually Happens to a Machine That Sits

Owners park a machine because there is no work for it, and assume nothing is happening. Something is happening. It is just slow enough that you only see it on the day you try to put the machine back to work.

WATER
Week 1 – 4
The battery starts going down. Diesel draws moisture out of the air and water begins settling at the bottom of the tank.
Month 2 – 3
Exposed ram rods start to pit. Seals that are never cycled dry out, and the first weeps appear at the cylinders.
FLAT SPOT
Month 4 – 6
Rubber tracks and tyres take a flat spot and start to crack. Grease has dried out of the pins, so bearings pit instead of turn.
RUSTED IN
After a year
Rodents find the wiring loom. The undercarriage rusts into whatever it is standing on. The first repair bill after a year parked is usually bigger than a year of running maintenance.

We collect it ourselves. Getting the machine to a job is not a separate thing for you to arrange.

One thing we will not pretend. Nobody can promise a machine is on hire every single month. What we will not do is let it sit and wait for the work to come back to it. If the jobs have moved somewhere else, that is where we take it — we are not fixed to one state. Your machine sits in the same queue as ours: jobs go to whichever machine suits the site, not to whoever owns it.
